FELL
Fell |
 |
Fell is a new project by Josh
Wambeke of the Denver, Colorado psychedelic pop duo Phineas Gage
( last heard in 2000 on their Camera Obscura CD "Reconsidered").
This album began life as a series of 4-track tapes culled from a backlog
of Wambeke's demos - experimental odds and ends that have since been worked
on with the heavily-reverbed space guitars and layered, subterranean vocals
that had comprised the Phineas Gage sound. This CD album runs the gamut
from psych to space to post-rock .... but in the end it is the band's
effortless song craft and precise arrangements that propel this music
into hearts and stratospheres. |

Astralis |

In all, EIGHTEEN
new / refined psychedelic folk numbers for Summer 2007 which also includes
3 excellent versions of British trad’ folk songs based on recordings by
Shirley & Dolly Collins and a cover of Alex Campbell’s “Been On The
Road So Long”... but wrapped around these are progressive / psychedelic
mystic folk reminiscent (and truly worthy) of this Summers’ ( ‘67/07 )
anniversary of ‘flower power’! Found-sounds, SITAR, flute & harmonium,
mixing nicely with the female vocals on here, with occasional lovely harmonies
amidst the heavily Eastern-flavoured music. Brand NEW album in VINYL (with
insert) as well as CD format. Gorgeous. |

4th full-length
release from West Philly-based solo artist Tara Burke aka Fursaxa. with
the low drone of chord organ & farfisa, detuned ringing guitar, &
endlessly looped, multiply-tracked vocals applied with heaps of delay.
Fursaxa sounds like a tripped-out medievalist perched upon a poppy petal.
Burke has an alchemical knack for turning folk into lo-fi, & then
into sheer psych & back again.
Her music is pure humming narcosis |

GARFIELDS BIRTHDAY
Let Them Eat Cake
Brand New In |
|
Sometimes the need for a new
hit of 1960s-styled sunshine harmony-pop becomes almost overwhelming, and
when you just happen to load up the fine sounds of “Let Them Eat Cake” by
Garfields Birthday ( and the entire Pink Hedgehog label back-catalogue for
that matter ) something deeply satisfying scratches that itch that was
making your world a little colder. If I begin listing ‘Power Pop’ names
like The Shoes, Big Star, The Records, Teenage Fanclub or the lesser-known
but wondrous Three Hour Tour or Frisbie …. well all of that music was
still deeply rooted in those long-ago (pardon my age ) mid-period Beatles
LP’s of yore, with jingle-jangley guitars, hook-laden psychedelic songs
and harmonies & a feel-good factor that is immeasurable in its warmth and
goodness. So it is with the Pink Hedgehog (UK) label’s latest release
Garfields Birthday! Just think of “Rubber Soul” ( particularly George
Harrison’s “If I Needed Someone” ) and you’re there, right in a shimmer of
dappled sunlight in the corner of Garfield’s garden shed, being on the
occasion of this glorious birthday celebration. Regardless of the season,
the sunshine will flood your heart and head !!! |

GHOST
Overture |

At sunset on the night of
October 9th, 2006, a crowd gathered at a converted warehouse space located
on Yokahama Bay, Japan. The performance space was chosen for its sonic
qualities such as natural reverb as well as its resemblance to Potala
Palace in Lhasa (Tibet). Band members were spaced apart to prevent eye
contact & allow distance for the reverberations to unfold. The CD is an
edited version of the evening’s events. The 90 minute DVD ( in Stereo or
5.1 Surround Sound ) is a completely LIVE, 4-camera view into the
collective journey of Ghost, their audience & awesome lightshow. 2 discs:

This is the
same line-up as on "Hypnotic Underworld". There are a
variety of sounds & songs, ranging from pop-folk numbers to hard rock
to outré concepts held together by their diverse musical personality.
They display intense power on these new recordings, incorporating frame
drums & tympanis & the "springer" (a device made by
Masaki Batoh that contains metal springs, a resonance box, a rotating
machine and a plasma light-ball to create a heavy yet theremin-like sound
) into their already diverse orchestra. Even includes a blasting
cover of Cromagnon’s “Caledonia”. |

GIANT SKYFLOWER BAND
Blood of the Sunworm |
 |
Glenn Donaldson
of THE SKYGREEN LEOPARDS, (never one to rest) dreamt of this exotic, flowery
and crumbling new recording project... with nods to fruity psych, prog,
folk, & pop songwriting for the 40th Anniversary of the 1st Summer
Of Love. He quickly invited multi-instrumentalist Shayde Sartin to “smoke
marijuana & make up strange pop songs, ” & thus the band was born.
With Gong's seminal "Magick Brother" as a starting point and
a SITAR close at hand… you just know this is going to tickle your fancy

After stocking

recently I’ve re-discovered it in a BIG way … so if you didn’t
get your hands on it first time around ... check it out. They really
said it ALL on this album … and some more besides : |

GRAILS
BURNING OFF IMPURITIES |
 |
Ok, for starters,
folks who know my previous lists, as well as the old PT magazine, should
know that STEVEN WRAY LOBDELL (Davis Redford Triad, Faust) is on here,
so you KNOW this is something really special….. and set against a horizon
of delayed steel strung haziness, ethnic instruments and half-heard vocals,
this is powerful stuff indeed. What Grails are doing is very much American
and seems to be deeply rooted in folk/blues music... altho’ this is rock-folk
(not folk rock) & the band have procured for themselves a distinct
sound…... truly, you aint heard nuthin like this !! Their songwriting
seems at all times to be coming out of that disused barn on mom and pops'
ranch, plied with moonshine and home-made ‘stuff ‘ and that's what gives
them the edge. VERY special music: Ethereal, Narcotic, Middle Eastern-style,
ALL-INSTRUMENTAL ( apart from those half-heard utterances ).. and HIGHLY
RECOMMENDED!!! |

PAJAMAS
Box of Secrets (aka: Northern Gothic 2) |
 |
On this
brand NEW album our Seattle chums are mining “childhood nostalgia”.
Inspired less by arcane literature and more by the three main songwriters’
own childhood experiences, which includes 70's TV movies dealing with
gothic themes of murder, secrets, and the supernatural... along with
small town life in the Pacific Northwest. It’s a conceptual album….
A follow- up if you will to 'Northern Gothic'(Camera Obscura, 2002)
The mostly fictional stories enclosed within this 'Box of Secrets' evoke
a shared memory or spooky sweet nostalgia, whether actually lived or
not. Though the subject matter is dark, the music and songs themselves
promise to be a bit more rocking & psychedelic than their last true
studio album “21st Century Séance” which explored more mellow
moods. Lovely though that was, THIS is top-hole PJ’s : |

Night Races into Anna |

A collection
of 20 rare & previously unreleased tracks from 1997-2006. Most of
these songs likely didn't fit the concept or 'sound' on whatever album
was being created at the time & (during sequencing) were left off.
The result is, ironically, a Pj’s album in what some might regard as the"classic"
sense: No theme or agenda to speak of; simply a collection of short, sweet,
psychedelic songs by one of the finest band’s on the planet. Yesss!! |

After
the recent success of the ESPERS cd here in

his latest album, released just before Xmas 04.
He makes the investigation of new songwriting
territory more focused melodically with richer harmonies & bolder
folk/rock presentation: “Newest
from one of the original troubadours of the new psych folk movement
& main driver behind Philly's ESPERS” .

Multi-instrumentalist Steven R. Smith's vehicle for instrumental
droned-out Eastern European folk music appreciation & interpretation.
By multi-tracking he becomes a one man orchestra, playing everything from
violin & optigan, guitar & harpsichord, cello, (the works) along
with snippets of samples & field recordings. Influenced by traditional
folk tunes from Hungary, Albania, Croatia, Macedonia, & other Balkan
backwaters, he turns them into total folk-psych gems. Originally released
as a limited CDr, this full-blown CD has 10 minutes of additional material
: absolutely MASSIVE and re-stocked due to much demand : |

A
summation of STEVEN R.SMITH(of the Jewelled Antler Collective)'s interest
in the trad folk-music of Central & Eastern
Europe. Not ethnological preservation, but a starting point .... By incorporating melodies, scales and instrumentations
of the village music from areas such as Croatia, Hungary, Romania, the
Czech Rep., & Poland,
he has pushed his music into yet another
NEW territory. Featuring gourd
guitar, glockenspiel, violin, &
even clay flowerpots, we hear gorgeous instrumental-only psych-folk. HIGHly recommended:

Brandon
Siscoe (Ink Puddle) plays a range of textures, from minimalist
electronics to edgy acoustic
folk that dovetails nicely with the NYC anti-folk movement of the day.
Ghostly vocals waft over the gloom-laden portraits of folky
minimalism that seem to bind instinctively to lush, narcotic soundscapes. WyrdFolk and just a little something extra makes this special: |

NEW 2007 official
full CD release of the ultra rare SUB POP limited edition of #100 (now
Sold Out) back in 2005. Now remastered & boasting 13 trax, we experience
the riotous imagination of Marco Fasolo as he ‘treats’ backwards,
fuzzed-about, sped-up & slowed down Jennifer G’ music in the privacy

astronomer Giovanni Paneroni, this album has both glimpses and full-on
stares into the
glaring eyes of genius. Syd would have approved. |

JOANNA NEWSOM
The Milk-Eyed Mender |
 |
I debated
long & hard about stocking this when it was first released & figured
she needed no help from me. But, by popular demand, I stocked “Ys” recently
so here it is. THIS is my favourite of the 2, containing LOTS of shorter
songs, ideas & styles…, instead of the rather over-indulgent latest
effort. So this is the DEBUT full album ( perhaps the most popular harpist
we have in stock :) who was making CDR’s, cassettes, & mp3s and had
toured with Devendra Banhart & Will Oldham long before all the fuss
over this years’ (2007) album. But although the music of this remarkable
singer/ songwriter/ harpist has an affinity with the folk revival of the
60's as well as the present ‘movement’, you can really pigeonhole it in
either style or neither. Her voice is ragged-sweet (mostly little-girl
sweet, but just a little ‘Melanie-on-cough syrup’ too), a bit odd &
completely compelling while the harp ranges from ethereal & delicate
to galloping & ornate. This amalgamation of sounds & themes create
a strange timeless music. |
