ADRIAN SHAW & ROD GOODWAY
Oxygen Thieves
Brand New In |
I can really do no better at
writing about this than to hand you over to Ade Shaw himself:- ‘Rod and I
first met in 1967 when we were both recruited into London Psychedelic band J
P SUNSHINE. We’ve remained best friends ever since and our musical paths
have often intertwined, having formed Bristol based band MAGIC MUSCLE
together and having both played in The BEVIS FROND. Down the years we mostly
went our separate ways musically, playing in numerous bands. Some were well
known, others less so but we pursued solo musical careers as well. Still our
paths crossed. I played in the live version of Rod’s ETHEREAL COUNTERBALANCE
many times and Rod found himself on stage with me when I made my debut with
Space Rockers HAWKWIND at The Roundhouse. However, we always planned to
record together again at some point and in 2008 finally found the time to do
so. “Oxygen Thieves” is the resulting album. Primarily
Psychedelic but within it you’ll find influences of the diverse musical
styles we love so much. We hope you like the album as much as we enjoyed
making it.’
Adrian Shaw, August 2009.
Hear here. We recorded whatever ‘happened’ & thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
With gorgeous artwork by the man known as DeKay,
plus a Steve Lines ‘Oxygen Fish’. |

This album comes the closest to filling the gap between the necessarily
more cerebral & layered process of studio recording & the rock action,
tribal bongo-banging, sentimental sing-alongs & chaotic entertainment
of their LIVE shows. For that you need to experience the bonus 102-minute
DVD that comes only with this FIRST edition, so do not dally. Beautiful
songs & harmonies, also wild and weird freak-outs. The Band? Zappa?

No Earthly Man |
| The
term "death ballad" might connote a certain
morbidity to some, and indeed a life ends with some degree of tragedy in
almost every song here. However, ROBERTS' deep feeling for the material
& his inventiveness (
in arranging these new versions) highlights the poetry of
the songs that have carried them over the years to our ears in the 21st
century. The music resonates with an otherworldly air, eerie in a way that
reminds us that death always lurks, but right now we are alive. Produced
by Will Oldham. |

ALEC
K REDFEARN & The Eyesores
Smother Party |
| On
this new album we have a collection of tales about real & imagined horrors.
Slow, simmering noir-ish dirges, spastic no-wave tangos, repetitive rhythmic
conundrums, drunken revelry, crippling depression, extreme self loathing,
Catholic guilt, clanking, scraping & radio noise …. that sort’a thing.
These are just some of the many facets that make up Alek & The Eyesores’
sound.Alec also recently appeared with SHARRON KRAUS at TERRASTOCK 6 dressed
(apparently for a bet) as a woman. Splendid says :- "This is wonderful
stuff – brave and experimental, yet warmly human. Make room on your folk
revival shelf for something that may be influenced by folk, but is in no
way a revival." From a well-respected musician this is truly unique. |

This one is a
little bit different and also rather special. Alec has played with Sharron Kraus and featured on the IDITAROD’s
“Yuletide” series, among many other great albums. Here his huge nine-piece
band (accordion/vocals, guitar, French horn, violin, electronics, alto sax,
string bass drums and percussion), combines
a gigantic array of influences, such as : Acid Folk, Eastern European
folk music, noise/drone rock, maverick 20th century Americana,
cyclical minimalism and
much, MUCH more…blending together this huge range of styles into
a distinctive, wholely charming sound.
There are not a lot of vocals, but what vocals there are are
nicely sung and feature a wry wit. Always
evolving and ever elusive, this is getting a LOT of spins here.
Here’s what our old pal George Parsons has to say:- "This massive musical
undertaking is a complex mix of psychedelic
folk, prog rock, acid circus music, Eastern mescaline swing and sinister dream
fragments that haunt in recurring motifs" –Dream Magazine. RECOMMENDED |

ANTON BARBEAU with Su Jordan
The Automatic Door |
|
Yep, Su Jordan has added
such an uncanny, harmony-driven chemistry to these NEW, 2007 songs that she
has joined Ant on his recent LIVE outings. She doesn’t dominate in any way,
yet adds so much. The sleeve pic’s of the Rollright Stones & Avebury (taken
by Ant’s girlfriend, Lorna) are just amazing and the supporting musicians on
here, including axe maestro KIMBERLY REW, are fabulous. This disc gives me a
1960 ’s flashback (for all the right reasons) reminding me, not for the
first time, of The Idle Race when I first heard their John Peel sessions in
the late 6T’s. Simply bursting with joyous pop/psych abandon. This is
superb!!! |

ANTON BARBEAU
Drug Free |
The ever-prolific Ant & his buddies (18 of them on this lp ) including Sharron Kraus & Alan Strawbridge, have produced another little masterpiece of pure
pop-psych here. Although Anton definitely has a voice & sound of his own, the opening (title) track sounds like John Lennon, while track 2 could easily be
The Idle Race, and “Alphalpha’bhang” by none other than prime-era David Bowie. But although it’s ‘lazy journalism’ to make these ‘major artist’ comparisons,
it’s only relevant when the songwriting and performance is this good. If only the lyrics and ideas of Jeff Lynne & David Bowie were as amazing as this in
2007 they’d be blaring out of every radio on the planet. And track 12 ( “In a Boat on the Sea” ) is absolutely stellar : |

Song Of The Pearl
Brand New In |
|
I was actually trawling
for the guitar solo-filled 2nd album ‘Rites Of Uncovering’ for my
collection, but man am I glad I found this (2009) latest instead. ( I’m so
impressed I bought some for YOU too :) 'Song of The Pearl' is the band’s
third album and, to the mainstream, it's probably everything a record in
2009 should not be, due to a multitude of music buyers craving smaller and
smaller sound-bites for their Mp3 players, but this is gigantic, original &
immaculate… & DEMANDS to be played ALL the way through each & every time.
Again, main man Dave Heumann (who I personally came to through Ned Oldham
and his lovely ANOMOANON ) goes the route of sonic explorer thru psychedelic
Americana, as heard through the web of late- 1960’s and early 70’s British
folk music …although vocally I can hear TIM ROSE in the quieter vocals and
JACK BRUCE in the heavier stuff. Maybe this IS like The ANOMOANON with a
Fairport Convention & Incredible String Band twist, with the voice of Tim
Rose backed by DINOSAUR JNR.!!? Let’s even include some of the best Neil
Young harmonies, some Wilco or Red Red Meat & add the spirit of Bob Dylan
jamming with Quicksilver & you may get a rough template of where this is at.
Confused ? OK, If you like raga-esque guitar solos, rolling tom-toms & songs
in psychedelic, melodius folk-rock territory BUY THIS NOW!! |

Over their recording career, Bardo Pond has released
countless tracks that have appeared only on singles, comp’s or other formats. In an effort to start compiling this
hard-to-find material, both the band and
3 Lobed Recordings are proud
to announce the debut of the ‘Cypher Documents’
series. The first installment
in this ongoing series compiles 7 long studio tracks that have never before
been released on major conventional media.
Unlike some of their looser, jam-session based material,
these tracks are extremely taut & succinct. This disc
acts as a sort of "lost" lp, and includes
exclusive tracks. Starting in late
1999, Bardo Pond ran a series of exclusive studio recordings
on their website formatted as MP3 files. Cypher

Whilst the debut album,
“Transparent Make-Believe”, (sold here at the time) sounded like the early
Floyd with the wide-eyed Syd Barrett at the helm, this latest release is
more akin to the solo Syd (eyes just as wide, but with a hundred yard stare)
or, more accurately, what he and his new band might have accomplished had he
kept 75% of his marbles. But, otherwise, this music is completely NEW and
21st Century in production values & experimentation. Indeed, your first
listen to this might hit you several inches above your head instead of
between the eyes, because it takes a couple of spins to really understand
what the hell is going on. But after a while it all begins to make a
beautiful sense. Yet while searching for some kind of ‘indentity’ to hang on
this music (compared to anything that has gone before) the only hint of
familiarity comes from Ben Glover’s vocals and that uncanny 'Barrett
presence’, something which spookily seems to go way beyond mere influence.
Genuinely as entertaining as it is disturbing, this deserves a huge
listening audience. Pure psychedelic vision put into true songcraft. Shine

BLACK SUN ENSEMBLE
Across The Sea of Id : The Way to Eden |
This latest, 2008 album
is a dramatic shift away from the heavy ethno / Prog’ rock of 2006’s “Bolt
of Apollo” to an earlier style of semi-acoustic instrumental music (most
apparent on the debut LP) that became the Black Sun Ensemble signature sound
in the 1980s. It is rumoured that this may be Jesus Acedo’s final recording,
which would be a very bad day for us all, as the title track “Across the Sea
of Id” (featuring Acedo’s achingly sad Sitar playing) and the lovely
“Perelandra” (both on this album) are just two of the stand-out tracks of
Acedo’s remarkable career. In fact, after repeated listens, THIS is one of
the finest BSE albums of them all !! “Sky Pilot Suite” is a massive ( over
12 minutes ) extrapolation of 4 amazing pieces, my favourites being “Dove of
the Desert” & “Bleeding Heart”. The Sitar features heavily on this and
throughout the album (taking full solo’s alongside ‘rock’ drumming on
“Walking Down Rosemary Lane” ), with that glistening acoustic ‘peacock
feather’ guitar all over & within everything else.
A fully instrumental album then, that will accompany me on many a future
road-trip. According to Arranger and multi-instrumentalist Eric Johnson :
“...in the end, BSE has truly come full-circle. "Across the Sea of Id" is
the record I have always wanted to make with the Ensemble. It captures what
I think makes Jesus Acedo such a huge talent ; its not just about the guitar
solos, its about the haunting quality of his song-writing.” And ‘haunting’
it certainly is, with such beautiful music unfolding in front of your ears
and (due to the hallucinatory-landscape nature of these sounds) before your
very eyes ! ! The ‘dove of the desert’ has flown. Extra ‘Hoorahs’ here for
TONY DALE & his excellent CAMERA OBSCURA label for releasing this real gem.

one. MOJO said :- “They’re lines he could have written in 1961, 1974,

is 65. You STILL ‘believe’ him. How great is that ?” Come on,

CAN
Anthology
( REMASTERED EDITION ) |
|
Between its 1968
inception in Cologne, Germany, as a rock outlet for classically trained
keyboardist Irmin Schmidt & jazz bassist Holger Czukay and its eventual
dissolution in the late 1970s, Can was an ever-mutating, endlessly
innovative entity. The deservedly admired & much-imitated Can was nothing
less than an unstoppable creative engine. This is a splendid overview of
(arguably) their very best work…. amazingly programmed + 24 Page Booklet &
beautifully Re-Mastered music, amounting to well over 155 minutes total : A
fantastic 29-track Double CD Anthology |

| “Day”
was originally released in 1971. Besides Parameter, this is the rarest release
on the UK Deroy label, as rare as Forever Amber or Dark. If you're into
“Then Play On”-era Fleetwood Mac, then this is your cup of tea. Billed as
a ‘gospel blues’ band and no doubt sneered at as ‘a Christian bunch’ at
the time, this is pure ‘Underground’…sporting that bluesy Peter Green-like
guitar, but with a folky edge. All original songs & heavy fuzz-guitar,
piano, effects too. From that expensive but fascinating SHADOCKS label in

Beginning
with minimalism, but always intermingled is the more ragged stomp of gypsy
styles & the best of
Sun City Girls. That’s as far as any similarities can go
tho’. They hoe their
own row. More amiable and accessible
but still the influences heard are staggering.

CHILDE ROWLAND
At The Mountains Of Madness
Brand New In |
The full title of this album is
“At The Mountains Of Madness & Other Strange Songs” but, although the
lyrical subject matter is sometimes literally out-of-this-world, I don’t
find many of these compositions to be musically strange in an uncomfortable
way ( indeed the musicianship is full-on & excellent throughout) although
there is a surreal beauty to ALL of these songs, some of which are lovely
re-workings of Steve Lines compositions from several of the various
incarnations of the STORMCLOUDS band. There is a fabulous ‘time warp’ feel
across this entire album that goes way beyond its ‘Archive (1996 – 2008 )
Recordings’ remit. First track “The Necronomicon” is a kick-ass rocker that
would have fit nicely into a Pink Fairies set circa 1972; likewise the 2nd
song, “Moon”, with a spooky Steve Took-like presence. After the eerie
treatment of Stormclouds’ “Midnight Sun” there is a Ziggy Stardust–type feel
to the 4th number “The Hounds Of Tindalos”, & I mean the entire Spiders From
Mars sound of Bowie / Ronson et al. Amazing. Indeed , if you ever loved
early Bowie & the more soulful songs of Marc Bolan you will LOVE this album.
There are 16 songs that feature really outstanding guitar playing by Oliver
St. John, especially the imaginative extended guitar solo’s
in songs such as “Brown Jenkin” . Also featured are Catherine Hurley (Flute)
and Frances Dorling (Cello) but mostly it’s the enigmatic St. John himself,
creating an ultimately rewarding album with top-notch quality output. The
artwork is by STEVE LINES himself, who has championed CHILDE ROLAND since
the early Acid Tapes days. And rightly so too. Classic !! |

After the positive and inspiring
experience of assembling the “Mountains Of Madness” Archive, Childe Roland
recently ‘reformed’ with various guest musicians and produced a CD album of
old and new songs. The resulting excellence was immediately grabbed for
release on Rainfall Records, complete with the signature artwork by label
head-honcho STEVE LINES. As with "At The Mountains Of Madness" - quality
stuff. |

brought in a handful of his favorite musicians & asked them to improvise
with him LIVE in the studio. The material was then edited, rearranged, and
produced, often with additional parts being added or subtracted as the musical
force of the album began to reveal itself. The end result is part collective
improvisation on a conceptual and musical theme and part gentle musical
construct from a totally new perspective . Of this album Thurston Moore
says : “So GREAT to hear NEW music!". And it IS !!! |

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Signal Morning
Brand New In |
Following the celebrated debut by this bunch (a veritable ‘best-seller’ here
) it then seemed a mystery why this official follow-up was 7 years in the
making, but we have since learned that Will Cullen Hart was finally
diagnosed ( in 2008 ) with Multiple Sclerosis. Thankfully then, this new
album still features all the members of Olivia Tremor Control, plus members
of Neutral Milk Hotel, and Apples In Stereo !! A quick re-cap:- In the
Golden Age of the lo-fi 90’s, there emerged a loose communal Arts compound
known as The Elephant 6 Collective. Robert Schneider indulged his Beach Boys
fetish in The Apples / Apples In Stereo; Jeff Mangum sculpted his Dylan
insecurities into the now mythic Neutral Milk Hotel, while Will Cullen Hart
and Bill Doss did their Psychedelic thang with the Olivia Tremor Control.
They pull out all the stops here to produce a collection that is infectious,
surreal, dense & lysergic . Cramming 17 songs onto the disc means that there
is no ‘excess baggage’. Instead, the music changes pace & identity with
bewildering speed, reminding of the Beatles, Flaming Lips, Dukes of Strat’ &
much else. (Not least those amazing Apples, OTC & Neutral Milk Hotel at
their very best :) |

COMETS
ON FIRE

Comets on Fire
circa 2006 are a different beast entirely. The shrilling oscillators and
mind warping echoplex have faded into the distance to be replaced by sumptuous
Hammond organ. The guitars are still psychedelic but full of warm reverb
instead of howling feedback. The vibes are unashamedly groovy. … like The
Grateful Dead have joined the party. Although the obvious comparisons
to Hawkwind still remain on hectic work-outs such as 'Dogwood Rust' , the
multi-tracked vocals call to mind vintage Jefferson Airplane. And that's
before the misleadingly titled 'Lucifer's Memory', which rather than sounding
like Slayer is more like vintage mid-period Pink Floyd . And so the reference
points here take in Procul Harem and even Cream. But is this a bad thing
?? It’s all to the extent that even if you only have a passing interest
in 70s heavy rock this album is nigh on essential. |

seems to have all the best musical bases covered here. After 3 minutes of
commercially catchy, heavily folk-flavoured songcraft of the highest order,
the guitar finger-picking begins to up-tempo as electric guitars join the
fray and this entire musical discovery takes off. We land again on a solid
grounding (the initial song) only to discover that 7 glorious minutes have
passed , and this is just the first number on this 5-song mini-lp, which
also includes a fascinating re-interpretation of a Jandek song, "I'm
Ready", which displays more actual musicianship than Jandek himself
ever dreamed of. Don't be slow grabbing this either as it's far too good
to miss & comes in a limited edition of just #200 hand-numbered copies.

DOCTORS POND
The Doctors Pond
Brand New In |
|
A band I was in myself many years
ago has reared its scaly head once more from the Marden Delta mud swamp -
and it ROCKS, baby !! Always a Steve Lines vehicle for his outbound worship
of The Gun Club, Cramps, Fuzztones, etc., this resulting oil–dripping
Cadillac does NOT go easy on the juice, mama. It kicks off with the
self-titled theme song and follows up in quick succession with Water In The
Well, Big Fat Toad, Fixin’ To Misbehave and Swamp Leach ( plus 6 more)
without once taking its foot off the gas. It just will NOT let you sit down
for a second!! Mike Humphries is on fine form as the lurching, cussin’,
hard-drinking half-Cousin of most of the Town’s occupants, along with Ken
Flynn (on loan from Stormclouds) and the unstoppable Lines on rhythm, lead,
slide & fuzz guitars, as well as bass. He also wrote, conceived & hustled
this entire album, contributing some of his more awesome Artwork into the
bargain. When the full moon rises over the Marden Delta Mud Flats, don’t you
dare go near The DOCTORS POND unless you want a really good time !! Far
freakin’ out !!! |

DOG AGE in memory of Syd

A psychedelic
pop rock jewel sounding very much like the Elephant 6 artists' Olivia
Tremor Control & Apples In Stereo with some Syd Barrett thrown in,
but their strong guitar work is laced with harpsichord, strings &
backward recordings. The production is clean, but with lysergic flourishes
throughout …carefree lyrics, sometimes stream of consciousness psychedelia
….. reaching the ear with simple yet irresistible vocal harmonies – a’la
mid-1960’s and beyond. |

the course of their 5 previous LPs they have produced some of the most notable
dream pop to come out of the US. Their brand new effort is perhaps their
heaviest sounding release to date with nods to late '60s & early '70s

strong memories of lush orchestration, pounding grooves, and melodies so
timeless that they take up permanent residence in the heads of those fortunate
enough to cross their path. |

from a standard Martin 6 string acoustic, Fender jazzbass and drumkit to
more exotic implements such as doumbek, dholak & those accomplished
male and female larynx. The outcome is a friendly new sensation, it warms
the room & dims the lights with dense yet agile atmospherics. Simply
