This album comes the closest to filling the gap between the necessarily
more cerebral & layered process of studio recording & the rock action,
tribal bongo-banging, sentimental sing-alongs & chaotic entertainment
of their LIVE shows. For that you need to experience the bonus 102-minute
DVD that comes only with this FIRST edition, so do not dally. Beautiful

No Earthly Man |
| The
term "death ballad" might connote a certain
morbidity to some, and indeed a life ends with some degree of tragedy in
almost every song here. However, ROBERTS' deep feeling for the material
& his inventiveness (
in arranging these new versions) highlights the poetry of
the songs that have carried them over the years to our ears in the 21st
century. The music resonates with an otherworldly air, eerie in a way that
reminds us that death always lurks, but right now we are alive. Produced
by Will Oldham. |

ALEC
K REDFEARN & The Eyesores
Smother Party |
| On
this new album we have a collection of tales about real & imagined horrors.
Slow, simmering noir-ish dirges, spastic no-wave tangos, repetitive rhythmic
conundrums, drunken revelry, crippling depression, extreme self loathing,
Catholic guilt, clanking, scraping & radio noise …. that sort’a thing.
These are just some of the many facets that make up Alek & The Eyesores’
sound.Alec also recently appeared with SHARRON KRAUS at TERRASTOCK 6 dressed
(apparently for a bet) as a woman. Splendid says :- "This is wonderful
stuff – brave and experimental, yet warmly human. Make room on your folk
revival shelf for something that may be influenced by folk, but is in no
way a revival." From a well-respected musician this is truly unique. |

This one is a
little bit different and also rather special. Alec has played with Sharron Kraus and featured on the IDITAROD’s
“Yuletide” series, among many other great albums. Here his huge nine-piece
band (accordion/vocals, guitar, French horn, violin, electronics, alto sax,
string bass drums and percussion), combines
a gigantic array of influences, such as : Acid Folk, Eastern European
folk music, noise/drone rock, maverick 20th century Americana,
cyclical minimalism and
much, MUCH more…blending together this huge range of styles into
a distinctive, wholely charming sound.
There are not a lot of vocals, but what vocals there are are
nicely sung and feature a wry wit. Always
evolving and ever elusive, this is getting a LOT of spins here.
Here’s what our old pal George Parsons has to say:- "This massive musical
undertaking is a complex mix of psychedelic
folk, prog rock, acid circus music, Eastern mescaline swing and sinister dream
fragments that haunt in recurring motifs" –Dream Magazine. RECOMMENDED |

full-length (already in stock here on CD) is presented in all it’s glory
on VINYL by good ol’ September Gurls Records. An amazing blend of old time
Americana, psychedelic rock jams & that entire West Coast guitar band
feel. This was the one which Alan Licht described as “…… that
great collaborative LP the Grateful Dead & Neil Young never got around
to making, somewhere between “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”
and “American Beauty”. Ha ha. Throw in The Anomoanon’s “Lost
Many Years In The Wood”” as well & I would even agree with this wild

Asleep Many Years in the Wood |

is the one where a fully formed phantom of the an earlier Neil Young &
Crazy Horse first emerged, complete with Garcia’s ghost. The Brothers OLDHAM,
with an LP ripe with smouldering Americana, hurls slow burning ballads that
occasionally burst into flame with raucous backwoods jamming. Inspired by
the birth of Ned's son & daughter, these songs have a communal, heartfelt
warmth only hinted at in previous works, with an overwhelming beauty &
depth that simply tugs at the hearstrings (and head-pan) & won’t let
go.. The true beginning of their evolution into the psych-folk/rock collective

This rural Kentucky
band, based around Ned Oldham (Brother of Will) is an amazing blend of psychedelic-tinged
rural/Southern rock, old time folk and psych rock jams....reminiscent of
Crazy Horse or/and Grateful Dead. Certainly embedded in late 60's/early
70's West Coast style sounds, the Anomoanon effortlessly drift away from
traditional song structure and melody into rootsy jam territory. They entwine
intense Vietnam noodling with the Appalachian/blues cadence, tap into the
soulful twang, serve an Allman-Brothers-style lead & blend the rustic
with the lysergic. The songs emit playful energy & relaxed melancholy
(a’la’ Neil Young) throughout... and, in a sea of glorified bar bands posing
as hipster revivalists, these guys are the real deal !!! |

ANTON BARBEAU with Su Jordan
The Automatic Door |

Yep, Su Jordan has added
such an uncanny, harmony-driven chemistry to these NEW, 2007 songs that she
has joined Ant on his recent LIVE outings. She doesn’t dominate in any way,
yet adds so much. The sleeve pic’s of the Rollright Stones & Avebury (taken
by Ant’s girlfriend, Lorna) are just amazing and the supporting musicians on
here, including axe maestro KIMBERLY REW, are fabulous. This disc gives me a
1960 ’s flashback (for all the right reasons) reminding me, not for the
first time, of The Idle Race when I first heard their John Peel sessions in
the late 6T’s. Simply bursting with joyous pop/psych abandon. This is
superb!!! |

ANTON BARBEAU
Drug Free |
The ever-prolific Ant & his buddies (18 of them on this lp ) including Sharron Kraus & Alan Strawbridge, have produced another little masterpiece of pure
pop-psych here. Although Anton definitely has a voice & sound of his own, the opening (title) track sounds like John Lennon, while track 2 could easily be
The Idle Race, and “Alphalpha’bhang” by none other than prime-era David Bowie. But although it’s ‘lazy journalism’ to make these ‘major artist’ comparisons,
it’s only relevant when the songwriting and performance is this good. If only the lyrics and ideas of Jeff Lynne & David Bowie were as amazing as this in
2007 they’d be blaring out of every radio on the planet. And track 12 ( “In a Boat on the Sea” ) is absolutely stellar : |

Unlike some of their looser, jam-session based material,
these tracks are extremely taut & succinct. This disc
acts as a sort of "lost" lp, and includes
exclusive tracks. Starting in late

Brand New In |
|
Whilst the debut album,
“Transparent Make-Believe”, (sold here at the time) sounded like the early
Floyd with the wide-eyed Syd Barrett at the helm, this latest release is
more akin to the solo Syd (eyes just as wide, but with a hundred yard stare)
or, more accurately, what he and his new band might have accomplished had he
kept 75% of his marbles. But, otherwise, this music is completely NEW and
21st Century in production values & experimentation. Indeed, your first
listen to this might hit you several inches above your head instead of
between the eyes, because it takes a couple of spins to really understand
what the hell is going on. But after a while it all begins to make a
beautiful sense. Yet while searching for some kind of ‘indentity’ to hang on
this music (compared to anything that has gone before) the only hint of
familiarity comes from Ben Glover’s vocals and that uncanny 'Barrett
presence’, something which spookily seems to go way beyond mere influence.
Genuinely as entertaining as it is disturbing, this deserves a huge
listening audience. Pure psychedelic vision put into true songcraft. Shine

one. MOJO said :- “They’re lines he could have written in 1961, 1974,

BYZANTIUM

of the early 70s British psychedelic scene, Byzantium released 3 albums
between '72 and '73. This debut is their most collectable (it
was a self produced, limited release), and is also undoubtedly their best.
When trying to describe their sound other bands of the time like Man &
Help Yourself come to mind, mainly due to the spacey West Coast vibe
featuring long improvised guitar solos and nice vocal harmonies.... but
when my own band (Magic Muscle) supported BYZANTIUM in Powis Square
at the 1972 Notting Hill Carnival, they completely blew ALL the other bands
away ... and at the time they sounded just like this: Heavy quality gatefold

CALIFONE
Heron King Blues |
| I’ve
been stocking CALIFONE for years here … even though they’ve sometimes lost
me money. Last year’s 2006 high-point “Roots & Crowns” has suddenly
changed all that and (at last) folks can’t get enough of Tim Rutili &
Jim Becker. Thus the welcome re-stock of this amazingly laid-back, stoned
& sleazy studio ‘happening’. Seven tracks that were either improvised
in the studio or written immediately prior to recording, and then chopped,
cut, mixed, & reassembled into this beautifully lush and patient masterpiece. |

CAN
Anthology
( REMASTERED EDITION ) |
|
Between its 1968
inception in Cologne, Germany, as a rock outlet for classically trained
keyboardist Irmin Schmidt & jazz bassist Holger Czukay and its eventual
dissolution in the late 1970s, Can was an ever-mutating, endlessly
innovative entity. The deservedly admired & much-imitated Can was nothing
less than an unstoppable creative engine. This is a splendid overview of
(arguably) their very best work…. amazingly programmed + 24 Page Booklet &
beautifully Re-Mastered music, amounting to well over 155 minutes total : A
fantastic 29-track Double CD Anthology |

was originally released in 1971. Besides Parameter, this is the rarest release
on the UK Deroy label, as rare as Forever Amber or Dark. If you're into
“Then Play On”-era Fleetwood Mac, then this is your cup of tea. Billed as
a ‘gospel blues’ band and no doubt sneered at as ‘a Christian bunch’ at
the time, this is pure ‘Underground’…sporting that bluesy Peter Green-like
guitar, but with a folky edge. All original songs & heavy fuzz-guitar,
piano, effects too. From that expensive but fascinating SHADOCKS label in

CHARALAMBIDES
Our Bed Is Green |
|
This is a recording
that roped in folk, improvisation, psychedelia, blues & gospel into
a crackling sound world utterly unlike anything else. Originally released
on 1 cassette by the band in 1992 & later partly reissued as a limited
edition CD on their Wholly Other label (also stocked here at the time),
the Kranky label is now proud to add this album to their Charalambides reissue
series, placing ALL of the original cassette (with the exception of 2 cover
songs) on this double CD set. This is more than
a historical document, the continuing relevance of the music is self-explanatory:
The limited 2LP VINYL will also be here soon. |

CHARALAMBIDES
Our Bed Is Green |
(first time on 180g vinyl : unique packaging/hand numbered # 800)
On vinyl for the first time ever. A historic milestone in the story of the
contemporary underground, as well as an extremely mind-melting dose of outsider
folk/ drone/psych in its own right. This massive recording flows through
haunting lo-fi slow motion folk, full-blown fuzzed-out spacerock, beautiful
outsider acid psych, loose blues forms and plenty of higher minded guitar
improv, all with a certain shining wide-eyed bliss. And yes, Chistina Carter’s
voice was just as jaw- dropping then as it is now. Pressed on 2 massive
slabs of audiophile 180 gram vinyl, and packaged in a beautiful silver &
clear ink letterpressed tri-fold cover, on heavy olive green art paper,
with extensive notes by Tom Carter. Hand numbered limited edition # 800 |

brought in a handful of his favorite musicians & asked them to improvise
with him LIVE in the studio. The material was then edited, rearranged, and
produced, often with additional parts being added or subtracted as the musical
force of the album began to reveal itself. The end result is part collective
improvisation on a conceptual and musical theme and part gentle musical
construct from a totally new perspective . Of this album Thurston Moore
says : “So GREAT to hear NEW music!". And it IS !!! |

Primitivism is slowly replaced with grander orchestration, 70’s synthesizers
&
haunted choruses. You could very well be listening to the greatest, long
lost
‘dark psychedelia’ record ever, coz this lp is also flush with dynamics
and
cold, chilly ambience. Whatever, it begins in a dungeon and ends in the
cosmos : |

pre-‘Metal’ CIRCLE. 9 tracks from the northernmost heirs to the Krautrock
tradition, taking basic riffs, stretching & reshaping them, creating
ever shifting grooves, making dizzyingly repetitive underwater rhythms &
sounding like an otherworldly, more damaged CAN. Re-printed at last PLUS
a bonus 10 minute track not on the original version. THIS is how I prefer

Comets on Fire
circa 2006 are a different beast entirely. The shrilling oscillators and
mind warping echoplex have faded into the distance to be replaced by sumptuous
Hammond organ. The guitars are still psychedelic but full of warm reverb
instead of howling feedback. The vibes are unashamedly groovy. … like The
Grateful Dead have joined the party. Although the obvious comparisons
to Hawkwind still remain on hectic work-outs such as 'Dogwood Rust' , the
multi-tracked vocals call to mind vintage Jefferson Airplane. And that's
before the misleadingly titled 'Lucifer's Memory', which rather than sounding
like Slayer is more like vintage mid-period Pink Floyd . And so the reference
points here take in Procul Harem and even Cream. But is this a bad thing
?? It’s all to the extent that even if you only have a passing interest
in 70s heavy rock this album is nigh on essential. |

seems to have all the best musical bases covered here. After 3 minutes of
commercially catchy, heavily folk-flavoured songcraft of the highest order,
the guitar finger-picking begins to up-tempo as electric guitars join the
fray and this entire musical discovery takes off. We land again on a solid
grounding (the initial song) only to discover that 7 glorious minutes have
passed , and this is just the first number on this 5-song mini-lp, which
also includes a fascinating re-interpretation of a Jandek song, "I'm
Ready", which displays more actual musicianship than Jandek himself
ever dreamed of. Don't be slow grabbing this either as it's far too good
to miss & comes in a limited edition of just #200 hand-numbered copies.
